Vyjanthimala Vyjanthimala 1936 -

Vyjanthimala is one of Bollywood cinema's most famous names. A talented actress and accomplished dancer, Vyjanthimala's first major success came in Nagin (1954), where she enthralled audiences with her classical dances to Hemant Kumar's immortal score. Her performance as Chandramukhi in Bimal Roy's Devdas (1955) saw her win the Filmfare Award Best Supporting Actress Award. However, she refused to accept it stating that Chandramukhi's character was not a supporting one but was a parallel leading role. Vyjanthimala ascended to the very top with Naya Daur (1957) and Madhumati (1958). She won her first Filmfare Best Actress Award for Sadhna (1958) and followed this up with another Award for Ganga Jamuna (1961). She reached her peak when she won a third Award for Raj Kapoor's Sangam (1964). But that was as good as things got. Her latter films, except Jewel Thief, didn't fare too well, but Vyjanthimala had by now already cemented her place in history…
