Sridevi Sridevi 1962 -

Sridevi is one of a handful of South Indian actresses to have made a significant impact in Bollywood. She started out as a child actress in the 1970s and first rose to prominence as a leading lady in Sadmaa (1983). Then in the 'masala' films opposite Jeetendra in the mid-80s including Tohfa and Himmatwala amongst others, Sridevi took her fame to the next level. By the late 1980s, Sridevi made the exalted number one position her own, with super-hits like Mr India (1987), Chaalbaaz (1989) and Chandni (1989), there was no stopping her.

Sridevi draped in a sari was a truly dazzling sight that could not be matched by any other Bollywood heroine, with perhaps the exception of Madhuri Dixit. The fall of Sridevi happened to coincide with the emergence of Madhuri and during the 1990s Sridevi's career became increasingly overshadowed by Madhuri. Sridevi featured in only a few memorable films of this time, most notably, the Award-winning Lamhe (1991) and Khuda Gawah (1992), opposite Amitabh Bachchan. With her career going nowhere, Sridevi decided the time right to get married and retire from films. Sridevi turned Producer with the Karisma Kapoor film Shakti, but the film did not fare too well. Sridevi and her husband, film producer, Boney Kapoor have two children.
