Bollywood At The Oscars

Indian films have been nominated in the Best Foreign Film category at the Oscars on 3 occassions. The first time was in 1957, when the Mehboob Khan's classic, Mother India, made the short list. India then had to wait thirty years before gaining its second nomination with director Mira Nair's debut film, Salaam Bombay in 1988. Aamir Khan's Lagaan earned an Oscar nomination in 2002.

In 2006, Deepa Mehta's Water received an Oscar nomination. Although primarily an Indian language film, this was actually put forward as Cananda's official entry (Deepa ia a Canadian citizen) and not as India's entry. To date, no Indian film has won an Oscar.

However, two Indians have won Oscars. In 1982, Bhanu Athaiya shared the Oscar for Costume Design for her work on the multi-award winning film, 'Gandhi'. Ten years later in 1992, Satyajit Ray, one of the world's greatest directors, received a Special Oscar for Lifetime Achievement.
