Naushad 1919 - 2006
Success did not come easily to Naushad, one of Bollywood's all-time greats. Following many struggles, including a
period sleeping rough on the streets, Naushad finally got a break in the early 1940s. With the success of Rattan
(1944), Naushad rose to the very top. He cemented his position with Shahjehan (1946), Anmol Ghadi (1946) and Andaz (1949). In 1952, Naushad's successfully
incorporated Indian classical music in his score Baiju Bawra, which won him the first ever Filmfare Best Music Director Award.
Naushad worked chiefly with Mohammed Rafi and the lyricist Shakeel Badayuni and the trio collaborated on many successful albums.
The ascendancy of Shanker-Jaikishen hampered Naushad from the mid-50s onwards. The brilliant Mughal-e-Azam (1960) sparked a
brilliant revival but it wasn't enough for Naushad to win a second Filmfare Award. Bar a Ganga Jumna (1961) or a Mere
Mehboob (1963), Naushad was unable to re-create his earlier magic.
