Meena Kumari 1932 - 1972

Meena Kumari entered films as a child artist in the late 1930s. Bimal Roy's Do Bigha Zamin that earned her the Filmfare Best Actress Awards at the inaugural event. In 1962, Meena Kumari made history as she took all the three Filmfare Best Actress nominations. Her performance in Guru Dutt's Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulaam (1962) is widely considered to be her finest and she became identified as Bollywood's 'Tragedy Queen'. Further success with Dil Ek Mandir (1963) and Kajal (1965) followed before a decline set in. Her swansong Pakeezah (1972) was released a month before her death and is recognised along Mughal-E-Azam and Sholay as one of the greatest Bollywood films.
