Jagjit Singh Jagjit Singh 1941 -

Singer-Composer Jagjit Singh is one of the most popular exponents of the Ghazal (an Indian poetic genre), of modern times. Jagjit established himself as a major player in the 1980s. His song from the film 'Prem Geet' (1981) became very popular and he was nominated for a Filmfare Award as Best Male Playback Singer. In 1988, Jagjit Singh outdid himself when he set Ghalib's immortal verse to music for the successful TV Drama Serial on the life of the great Poet.

To date, Jagjit has released approximately 40 albums, many of which, feature the vocals of his beautiful wife, Chitra. Jagjit's highly expressive voice and his soothing melodies perfectly compliment every verse he sings. He has modernised the Ghazal with his innovate compositions and his use of western instruments, in what was formerly a traditional field. Whilst he may not be seen as being in the same league as Mehdi Hassan or Ghulam Ali, Jagjit Singh truly deserves great credit for making the Ghazal form accessible to the younger generation, who previously had little interest in it.
