Dev Anand 1923 -
Dev Anand is one of Bollywood's greatest stars. His first few acting assignments in the late
1940s did little to further his case, with the exception of Ziddi (1948). Things changed for the better
when Dev set up his own company, Navketan, in the early 1950s. Guru Dutt's debut as director, Baazi (1951),
was the hit that Dev needed to be on his way. Taxi Driver (954), Munimji (1955), CID (1956) and Kaala Pani (1958)
followed and Dev, along with Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor, became part of the Bollywood Trinity that ruled uring the 'Golden'
decade.
Dev started the 1960s brightly enough with a wonderful performance in a double role in
Hum Dono (1961). The mega-hit Guide (1966) was the peak of Dev's career, where he gave a
career-best performance. Dev's Johnny Mera Naam (1970), Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1972)and Des Pardes (1978)
were his best moments of the 1970s, a time when he took up directing films. Dev Anand has not scored a major
hit for some time, but that has not put him off and he still continues to make films today.
